Our Impact

Blooom is designed to achieve permanent, systemic change.

Development aid often takes the form of temporary relief that weakens existing infrastructures of self-support, and makes recipients even more vulnerable in the long run.

Blooom does the opposite. We strengthen existing institutions and provide farmers the tools that they need to lift themselves out of poverty and become independent, successful agro-entrepreneurs.

A unique, proven development model

Our work relies on our three-tier farmer development model.

We start with subsistence farmers (Tier I). First, we focus on developing more productive businesses that deliver better quality produce, primarily for local markets (Tier II).

Once there is a solid base that they can build on, we help farmers secure the finance, know-how and technology that they need in order to become hiqh quality, high volume, export-capable agro-entrepreneurs (Tier III).

So far, our model has impacted over 40,000 lives.

Nuanced, independent monitoring

We have established partnerships with academic institutions to conduct randomized controlled trials on an ongoing basis, with phased access to our platform.

They measure our performance against the following key criteria: reduced smallholder poverty, improved sustainability of the food system, stronger rural-urban linkages, and inclusive development. Their results help us continually improve the platform and increase our impact.

Before the current, overarching assessment process has started, regional project evaluations have shown that Blooom can:

  • increase production by 20%
  • reduce food waste by at least 10%
  • increase farmer incomes by 30-40%

Women

Currently, at least 30% of all the farmers whom we work with are women. This is a ratio that exceeds what we commonly find in most developing countries — and one that we seek to maintain in every new community.

Youth

Youth are a key constituency in our model, both because young farmers are generally more receptive to technological solutions, and because on average they are the most likely to possess the drive and the education that is required to join our network as Blooom entrepreneurs.

Our target is to hire 100,000 Blooom entrepreneurs over the next 4 years. It is a central part of our mission to make farming attractive for young people again, and help farmers’ children stay on their families’ lands.
